The
SO2 generator was designed by Darrell Harmon, a farmer in Kings County, in
Lemoore, CA, in the late 1950s. He had a problem with his irrigation water
because he was getting sodium buildup and calcium carbonate forming in the soil
and the water wouldn't penetrate the soil. Having some chemistry history, he
came to the conclusion that sulfur dioxide would be the one that would reverse
this process.
Chemistry indicated that you could only make 3 tons of sulfuric acid with one
ton of sulfur, in the chemical process in the reduction of carbonates and
bicarbonates, 1 ton of sulfur is equivalent to 6 tons of sulfuric acid.
He found that he could treat the water with sulfuric acid but it was very
expensive and hazardous, the problems with the water flows vs. the gypsum, he
couldn't put enough gypsum on the ground to keep up with the water flow.
After many water tests and soil analysis were performed and by reading an
article about evaluating water by using the residual sodium carbonate method, he
decided to look around for a sulfur dioxide generator that would fit on his
agriculture application.
After numerous phone calls and traveling expenses, there wasn't anything on the
market that fit this agriculture application. So Darrell Harmon decided to look
around on his ranch and see what he had to make a machine that would work on his
application. After several experiments, he came up with a design that would
actually work.
After 3 months, he had so much more water penetration than
that of before, he had to shorten his water runs. All of the other
ranchers in the area soon became interested in what Mr. Harmon had invented.
Word traveled in the community and soon every farmer around needed help with his
soil and irrigation water. With so much response, Darrell Harmon decided to
expand his farm operation to include the sales of SO2 Generators. He
incorporated the help of his son, John Harmon and the assistance of three
welders to produce what was the known as first series of the Harmon SO2
Generator.
By the late 1970s there had been many changes in the design, with trial and
error, The Harmon SO2 Generator has been modified and produced into a machine
that was very popular with the local farmers. They moved their operation from
Lemoore, CA to Bakersfield, CA. They started shipping these units all over
California, Arizona and Nevada. Darrell and John Harmon had built a thriving
business. The generator business was so much more profitable than the ranching
business that they concentrated on it full time.
The Harmon SO2 Generator is still manufactured by John Harmon since the death of
his father, Darrell Harmon in 1986, and now the next generation of Harmon's,
John's son, Jeff Harmon. As of July 2002, there have been 1145 Harmon SO2
Generators sold world wide including Australia, Scotland, Hawaii, Japan, Saudi
Arabia. Not just for Agriculture applications,
The Harmon SO2 Generator can work for many applications such as Turf,
Waste Water Treatment, Oilfield Water Production, CBM or anywhere SO2 can be used.
